Babe Rainbow

'Punks'

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Aug 14, 2012

Babe Rainbow (aka newly Toronto-based electronic screwball Cameron Reed) isn't shelling out quite as much freebie material as, say, Lil B, but the dude definitely gives up the goods on a regular basis. Just two weeks on from the release of his four-song One Morning EP, the twisted beatsmith has offered up another couple of cuts under the title Punks.

First up is the Brand Nubian-referencing "Punks Jump Up to Get Beat," which as far as we can tell doesn't sample the 1993 rap classic, but features some gun-clapping and castanet-clacking beneath a wobbly high-pitched synth melody.

"You're Going to Fucking Clown School," meanwhile, gets by on a chain gang-style stomp-and-clap rhythm, not to mention some schoolyard giggling and a chorus of "whats." Other touches include heating-duct whooshing and a sliding bass rhythm that could've played on any early Fugazi track.
