A little ways into their set, the Barr Brothers' frontman Brad Barr remarked that they were thrilled to be the first act at the inaugural Toronto Urban Roots Festival. An early Thursday evening time slot may not be ideal, but as a scattered handful of fans filled in with the post-work downtown crowd, the Montreal folk quartet only gained more admirers. They delivered their delicate folk sound through tracks from their self-titled debut like "Old Mythologies" and set closer "Beggar in the Morning," but also showed off their darker, bluesy side when they treated the audience to new material. The band turned on the charm with hand-clapping and four-part harmonies on a single mic — and it's not every day you get to see a harp grace the stage in a field in downtown Toronto. They weren't the night's most memorable act, but the Barr Brothers did a fine job of welcoming the early birds to a promising weekend of outdoor music.
