Having appeared on a recent EP by Japanese composer Cokiyu, California beatmaker Baths is finally back with his second official LP. Obsidian is due out on May 28 through Anticon.
This album is reportedly darker in tone that 2010's Cerulean, and project mastermind Will Wiesenfeld said in a statement, "I've always been inspired by really dark material and from the beginning I knew I wanted the songs to be much darker, both musically and lyrically."
This shadowy tone makes good on promises he made a couple of years ago.
Wiesenfeld had originally intended to begin work on the album in the summer of 2011, but his progress was stalled when he was bed-ridden for months with E. coli. When he finally got back to work, his inspirations apparently included the Dark Ages, the Black Plague and different versions of hell.
"The songs and lyrics all came out of a pretty fucked and arduous process of trial and error," he said. "But I hope people understand that I'm not the depressed, suicidal, and death-obsessed person the record may paint me as being. These are just darker areas that I wanted to explore."
