Beefs 2013: Sufjan Stevens Gives Savages' Designer a Typography Lesson

BY Josiah HughesPublished Jul 24, 2013

New York-based pop experimenter Sufjan Stevens gives off the impression of being a very nice guy. Apparently, however, if you don't take your typography seriously, he will take you to task. Whoever designed the front cover for post-punk band Savages' recent Silence Yourself LP found out the hard way, as Soof gave them a talking to on his blog.

In a post, he admitted that he enjoys the band, calling them "very cool," but goes on to admit that he's blown away by the font issues on their album art.

Check out his statement below:

The very cool SAVAGES has allowed a very uncool typographical blunder on its LP cover: Helvetica Narrow (weight loss is the worst thing that can happen to an iconic font, aka iOS 6). Also can we talk about the weird italics (unnecessary affectation, and very un-British), cramped leading (totally unforgivable) and unnecessary line break? Who the Fraggle designed this?

Any design nerds out there care to respond? Let us know what you think of Sufjan's typography rant in the comment section below.
