There's been a flurry of activity in the Beirut camp of late. Last month, Zach Condon and co. announced a string of shows this summer, including Canadian stops in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. And it wasn't long ago that we pointed to the horn-laden indie poppers contributing a track to the Red Hot + Rio 2 compilation. If you believe that all good news comes in threes, then get ready for this: Condon has announced that a new Beirut album is on the way.
A recent interview with the band leader reveals that the troupe's next album, their first since 2007's The Flying Club Cup, will come out "sometime this summer." Though there's not too much info to go on beyond that, Condon did explain that the record was recorded this past winter in Upstate New York. Despite the snow that rocked the region at the time, Condon says the chilly weather inspired some seriously sun-jammin' tunes.
"This wintry album is quite 'sunny,'" he told HitFix. "I write sad songs when it's nice outside. I write warm and happy songs when I'm up to my neck in snow for three months."
While past efforts have focused on Condon's trumpeting and ukulele skills, this latest set apparently positions him behind 88 keys as well.
"I worked a lot more on my piano chops," he said.
Neither a title, tracklist nor a release date have been revealed, but with summer just over a month away, we can hopefully expect the info to drop soon.
