Last week, Aussie rockers INXS announced the end of their touring career, but part of their 35-year history will be brought back to film screens via a planned biopic on the band's late singer Michael Hutchence.
702 ABC Sydney [via Rolling Stone] reports that writer Bobby Galinsky is currently working on a screenplay for a film called Two Worlds Colliding, which references a line from the band's 1987 ballad "Never Tear Us Apart," with hopes to start casting next year.
"It will be a very big task. This is something that I've wanted to do for over a decade," Galinsky said of the project, adding that it's based on the 2000 biography Just a Man — The Real Michael Hutchence, which was written by the vocalist's mother Patricia and sister Tina.
"It's from the family's side as Michael being a son, a brother, a friend," he continued. "It's not a sex, drugs and rock'n'roll tabloid situation."
Hutchence died under mysterious circumstances in a Sydney hotel room in 1997, though coroners ruled his death "a suicide while depressed and under the influence of drugs and alcohol."
While the end of the singer's life will no doubt figure into the film, it will also tackle the massive success of INXS. Between 1977 and 1997, the singer fronted the band and made waves worldwide on early singles "Original Sin" and "What You Need." His sensual vocals on their smash 1987 album Kick propelled the band to the top of the charts, with "Need You Tonight" and "New Sensation" both hitting No. 1 in Canada.
Galinsky went on to say that the film will chronicle several facets of the performer's life and career in order to attempt to answer: "Who was Michael Hutchence? What drove him? What were his demons? What were his loves?"
