Following videos for "Ovule" and "Atopos," Björk has shared the third single from her forthcoming 10th studio album Fossora, arriving September 30 via One Little Independent. "Ancestress" — with vocals and vocal arrangements courtesy of Björk's son, Sindri Eldon Þórsson — arrives alongside a music video by Andrew Thomas Huang with co-creative direction by Björk and James Merry.
One of two songs partially inspired by the death of her mother, Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir, "Ancestress" is "her story seen from my point of view," the musician explained in an Instagram post. "It is written in chronological order, the first verse is my childhood and so on."
She added: "Only recently did I discover that this song is probably somehow inspired by an Icelandic song 'grafskrift,' which is somehow a very direct and patriarchial account of someone's life. I probably wanted to approach this in a more feminine way, her biological and emotional story, not her professions, partners or dates of birth and death."
In the weeks leading up to the release of Fossora, Björk has been breaking down each album in her discography on her new podcast, Björk: Sonic Symbolism, where episodes about Debut, Post, Homogenic, Vespertine, Medúlla and Volta have already been posted.
