Conspiracy theorists and audiophiles may want to rally around a turntable spinning Black Mountain's just-dropped IV LP. In addition to being the first full-length release from the group in close to six years, the band now report — or perhaps joke — that they've hidden a secret, backwards-masked message deep within its grooves. If you can figure out what it is, you could win lifetime entry into their gigs.
As previously reported, the album was released today (April 1) through Dine Alone/Jagjaguwar. A Facebook post from the band suggests you give the vinyl version more than a surface listen.
"Like the towering, dark classic records of yore, we have placed a hidden message within IV that can only be heard if the vinyl is played backwards," they wrote, adding that if you can suss out said cryptic message, you could win lifetime tickets to Black Mountain shows in your area, "festivals notwithstanding."
Below, you'll find a quick clip of a white vinyl copy of IV spinning an ass-backwards version of album opener "Mothers of the Sun."
To enter the contest, you need to post a message on social media with the hashtag "#BLACKWARDSMOUNTAIN." A lone decipherer will be selected next Friday (April 8).
Keep in mind that the contest was announced on April Fool's Day, so it's very possible Black Mountain are simply tugging our legs. That said, keep your ears perked as you toast up a joint and flip your banged-up Technics 1200 into reverse. Happy decrypting, everyone!
As previously reported, Black Mountain are currently out in Europe, but will be touring North America later this month and into the summer. You'll find the show info over you'll find the tour info over here.

IV is out NOW! Like the towering, dark classic records of yore, we have placed a hidden message within "IV" that can only be heard if the vinyl is played backwards. We're asking you to report your findings to us on Facebook or Twitter with the tag #blackwardsmountain. And a week from today, we will select a single decipherer from the entries. The winner's bounty will consist of a pair of lifetime tickets to any Black Mountain show in your immediate area — festivals notwithstanding — and every release from the Black Mountain catalogue. #BLACKWARDSMOUNTAIN
