This month's Sochi Winter Olympics have been mired in controversy thanks to Russia's hotly debated anti-gay laws. Now, Blondie singer Debbie Harry has become the latest singer to align herself against the games, as she rejected an offer to perform at the event.
This past Friday (February 7), Harry tweeted an image (above) of an offer the band had received to perform at Sochi's Red Rocks Festival. This would have involved a free show at Sochi Medals Plaza on February 13, with an audience of up to 25,000.
As you can see, someone scrawled the words "PASS" and "HUMAN RIGHTS" on the page in black Sharpie. The accompanying tweet included the hashtag #pass4humanrights.
Blondie were recently part of Amnesty International's "Bringing Home Human Rights" concert in Brooklyn on February 5. This targeted the Sochi Olympics and Russian leader Vladimir Putin's human rights record, and included an appearance from famed former Pussy Rioters Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alekhina.
