Boards of Canada Release Cryptic 12-Inch for Record Store Day

Last year, Boards of Canada hinted that they were working on new material, but they neglected to confirm any information about a possible new album. Now, they've teased their fans again, this time by releasing an ultra limited 12-inch for Record Store Day.

According to a report by 2020k [via Pitchfork], a few records were hidden in select record stores this Saturday (April 20). It's not clear exactly how many of the records were made, but Reddit user Lilcakey reportedly found one at Other Music in New York City.

This 12-inch, which was pressed by Warp and dated 2013, apparently contains only 20 seconds of audio. Lilcakey wrote that it features "a very boards-of-canada-ey voice with synth backing saying a six digit number once, and then cuts out." The numbers in question are 9-3-6-5-5-7.

The record is cryptically titled ------ / ------ / ------ / XXXXXX / ------ / ------. It's currently unclear if this is all part of some elaborate code. Watch the record being played and hear the music in the clip below.

2020k points out that Scottish photographer Iain Stewart tweeted that Boards of Canada plans to release an album in June. At this point, we should take all of this with a grain of salt, but we'll hopefully being hearing more from the Boards of Canada camp soon.
