BJ02: Souljazz

BY Cheryl ThompsonPublished Dec 1, 2003

This is perhaps one of the best house compilations released this year. Souljazz is exactly that: improvisational jazzy riffs masterfully blended to soulfully spiritual lyrics. This continuous flow album thankfully brings a little tender love and care back into compiling and selecting songs for a comp. Souljazz includes such sultry house tracks as De-Us’s, "Reaching for the Sky” and Aaron Ross presents Rain People’s "Trippin’ on Love.” And, for all those who like that Brazilian bossa nova sound, Dr. Jones has a little of that flava too with 95 North’s "Chasing My Dream,” Bibi’s "Zum Zum” and Jazztronik’s "Livin High pt. 1&2.” Finally, there’s a little ambient soul mixed towards the end of Souljazz with John Culter’s "The Spirit of Summer” and Five Corners Quintet feat. Eero Koivistoinen’s "Trading Eights.” If this compilation does not move you to shake your groove thang, you must truly have no soul. Not to worry, Dr. Jones has just the remedy to fix that problem as Souljazz is truly music for the soul.
