Boris Dlugosch/Various

This first compilation by Dlugosch, a Hamburg-based DJ and producer who has been on the scene since the late ’80s, looks promising but is disappointing. On these two CDs, Dlugosch has mixed tracks from the early ’80s with newer material from Iz & Diz, Le Dust Sucker and Dexter and has included well-known artists such as New Order, the Human League and Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force. Unfortunately, the whole is not greater than the sum of its parts. It just sounds like a lot of, um, parts, backed by a continuous beat. Dlugosch’s use of the West Street Mob’s "Break Dance — Electric Boogie” makes me want to listen to Prodigy’s Dirtchamber Sessions mix instead. His compilation sounds cold and impersonal compared with the organic sounding mix by the Prodigy. Swayzak’s "Make Up Your Mind” stands out for that precise reason — its warmth is a welcome reprieve from the cool sequencing preceding it, though it must be said that he’s mixed it with Metro Area’s "Miura” to great effect.
