Ontario indie rock unit Born Ruffians are slated to return with their fourth LP RUFF this fall, and they've unveiled a new track to help ease the anticipation.
The wordy "When Things Get Pointless I Roll Away" is a response to a fan who made his displeasure with the band's new material known to them.
"It's meant to take the piss out of myself, comment on a totally solipsistic kind of view that my songs really have any importance or objective truth, meaning, goodness," frontman Luke Lalonde told Consequence of Sound, where the track premiered. "But also it's the inability to grasp at even a meaning that simple. That while trying to write such a direct song to one specific person I am constantly struggling to get what I mean out and losing my point. So the title and refrain of the song is a nod to Harry Nilsson's 'The Point!'"
Lalonde's ode to the disappointed fan and his own scattered mind is matched with a punchy, start-and-stop rhythm, layered instrumentation and Lalonde's anxiety-soaked vocals before descending into a trippy, abstract outro.
RUFF arrives on October 2 through Paper Bag Records/Yep Roc. Listen to "When Things Get Pointless I Roll Away" in the player below.
