Braids

'Flourish // Perish' (album stream)

Braids recently spoke with Exclaim! about their overhauled electronic sound, and now we can experience the full scope of their vision, as the band have shared their Flourish // Perish full-length. Prior to its August 20 release through Flemish Eye, it's available to stream on Exclaim.ca.

The band self-produced the album in Montreal, in the process losing a member when keyboardist Katie Lee parted ways the band. Meanwhile, the musicians left behind the guitars and drums of their past work, instead giving themselves a computerized makeover.

Discussing her love of electronic music, singer Raphaelle Standell-Preston previously told Exclaim!, "It's strikingly beautiful. It's very amazing, and to me, it reflects where we have gone to as a human race in 2013 and our involvement with the iPhone and laptops and everybody being interconnected. That's one of the reasons I think that electronic music excites something inside of me."

The album sports densely syncopated beats, atmospheric synth twinkles and cooing vocals. Atmosphere and texture take precedence over upbeat danceability, as the band eschew traditional synth-pop in favour of stranger and more low-key sounds.
