Coming from the Kamasi Washington camp, Brandon Coleman has already got a huge co-sign. An acclaimed keyboard maestro, vocalist, composer, producer, arranger and astral traveller, Resistance rides and dies for the funk and goes hard.

With cited musical heroes like Herbie Hancock, Peter Frampton and Roger Troutman, Coleman riffs off the theme of freedom, the unbridled pursuit of a genre-less future. And this gets it there: "Giant Feelings" sets the stage, a track initially penned for his famed inner circle, backed by the commanding vocals of Patrice Quinn. The blues of "Sexy" carries a sensuous swank; "Addiction" is a funky and faithful mashup of Zapp and Prince; "Just Reach for the Stars" has the Hancock signature all over it; and the galaxy-spanning funk-dance orchestra of "Live for Today" is a studly standout.

Overall, the 12-track Resistance merges R&B, soul, electro and funk in a package that's compact and complete.
