BreakOut West had been scheduled to run from September 30 to October 4 in Winnipeg, but with coronavirus lockdowns continuing to prevent in-person gatherings, the annual festival and conference has announced plans to move online.
BreakOut West: Home Edition will run from September 25 to October 9, with the event coming alongside the recently announced Western Canadian Music Awards.
Given the perilous state of the Canadian music industry, the festival is placing an emphasis on networking and professional development. This will include keynote speakers, panel discussions, mentorships, networking events and other industry-minded events.
All this will include a focus on how COVID-19 has impacted the industry, and what various international markets will look like in the next couple of years. There will even be some wellness events like yoga, meditation and a running club.
Sean McManus, president of the Western Canadian Music Association's board of directors, said in a statement:
The Western Canadian Music Association and our partner music industry associations are excited that this year's BreakOut West will be coming safely into participants homes, studios, and offices, as we continue supporting artists and industry development through this difficult year. In keeping with the BreakOut West experience, our team is working to bring intimate engagements and broad industry connections to the online experience. We look forward to connecting virtually this fall.
Even though there won't be concerts in the traditional sense, BreakOut West will be highlighting a juried selection of artists. These include Snotty Nose Rez Kids, the Jerry Cans, Shred Kelly, FRANKIIE, 36?, Slow Down Molasses and more. See the full list here.
Passes cost $50, with discounts available for members of Western Canadian Music Industry Associations, SOCAN, CIMA and CLMA. They're available here.
As previously reported, the Western Canadian Music Awards recently announced all the nominees for its 2020 edition. The winners in both the artistic and industry categories will be announced on September 25 during a livestream event.
BreakOut West has confirmed the dates of its 2021 edition, which will run from October 13 to 17.
