When we recently reported that the new Broken Social Scene album was putting the brakes on Tortoise, we had no idea the record was coming up so soon. Turns out it's now got a release date, a crazy list of guest stars and a set of shows to follow it up.
The album, which is as-of-yet-untitled, is set for release on May 4, courtesy of the band's Arts & Crafts label. It will feature the group whittled down to a line-up of Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, Andrew Whiteman, Charles Spearin and newcomer Sam Goldberg, as well as Calgary expat/Reverie Sound Revue vocalist Lisa Lobsinger.
However, that didn't stop all the original supergroup members and more from joining in on the fun. Feist, Stars' Amy Millan and Evan Cranley, and Metric's Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw all return to the fold, as do extended BSS family members Jason Collett, Do Make Say Think's Ohad Benchetrit, John Crossingham, Marty Kinack, Julie Penner, Leon Kingstone and Lisa Lobsinger.
And it turns out Tortoise weren't the only non-BSS-affiliates hanging around the studio. Besides Tortoise's John McEntire, who produced the album, and Doug McCombs, the album will also feature the Sea and Cake's Sam Prekop, Pavement's Spiral Stairs, former Death From Above 1979 singer/drummer Sebastien Grainger, Poi Dog Pondering's Susan Voelz, Helen Money's Alison Chesley and the Weakerthans' Jason Tait.
Spiral Stairs, eh? We smell a big collaboration at this year's Pavement-featuring Toronto Island Festival.
Broken Social Scene will also play a number of U.S. and European dates in May, and we have a feeling more shows are just around the corner.
