The last we heard from Toronto roots collective Bruce Peninsula, frontman Neil Haverty had been diagnosed with leukemia. In an interview with Exclaim!, the singer revealed that he had undergone chemotherapy and was hopeful for a complete recovery. Well, we have some good news: Haverty's cancer is in remission, and Bruce Peninsula are gearing up for some new releases.
In a statement to Exclaim!, Haverty explained, "They call this the 'maintenance phase.' I will still take a pill called ATRA for a year and I will check in with my doctor once a month, but I'm basically done with all the truly icky stuff."
Now that the worst is behind him, Haverty and his band are ready to put out some new music. We already knew that Bruce Peninsula's sophomore album, Open Flames, was in the can. Before they release that into the world, though, the band will unveil Bruce Trail Fire Sale. According to a press release, this is a "digital B-side series that collects one-off songs, covers, live videos... whatever we can dream up."
Some of these recordings come from last year, while others were laid down by Haverty's bandmates over the winter, and still more are currently incomplete. Bruce Peninsula are calling it "a sort of look under the hood of the mothership while we recharge the batteries and tune up the engine."
The Bruce Trail Fire Sale begins today (April 15) with a cover of Loudon Wainwright III's classic '70s cut "The Swimming Song," which is embedded at the bottom of this page.
From here, Bruce Peninsula will post something new "a couple of times a month" up until the release of Open Flames. There's no word as to when exactly that will be, but now that Haverty is on the road to recovery, it's only a matter of time.
