After being arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, and consuming alcohol in a closed area back in November, Bruce Springsteen attended a virtual court hearing with his lawyer earlier today. The drunk driving charges were dropped, but Springsteen was ordered to pay a $500 USD fine for drinking in a national park.
"Mr. Springsteen is pleased with the outcome of today's court appearance," Springsteen's lawyer Mitchell Ansell told Rolling Stone. "The prosecutor was unable to provide the necessary evidence and facts as it related to the charge of Driving under the Influence (DUI) and Reckless Driving and therefore dismissed both of those charges."
Earlier this month, it came to light that Springsteen had been arrested after taking shots of tequila with a fan in New Jersey's Gateway National Recreation Area, though it was later reported that he blew 0.02 on a breathalyzer test — a quarter of the state's legal limit.
At the court hearing, Springsteen did plead guilty to consuming alcohol in a closed area, which earned him the fine.
Ansell added: "Mr. Springsteen, who has no previous criminal record of any kind, voluntarily plead guilty to a violation of consuming an alcoholic beverage in a closed area, agreeing to a fine of $500."
Springsteen's arresting officers originally disputed Springsteen's side of the story, and claimed that he smelled strongly of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and that he refused a breathalyzer test upon his arrest.
Soon after news of the formal charges was made public, Jeep announced it would be pulling the singer's Super Bowl ad, for which Springsteen wrote and produced the accompanying music. The ad was Springsteen's first-ever commercial appearance.
