Buffy Sainte-Marie has been stripped of another honour, as she was removed from an exhibit at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, MB.
The national museum said in a statement to the CBC that, back in December 2024, she was removed from an exhibit dedicated to human rights defenders. This action took place following consultations with advisers, including Indigenous elders.
Earlier this year, Sainte-Marie's Order of Canada was similarly terminated.
This follows a 2023 investigation into the songwriter's ancestry. Despite the artist's claims of Indigenous ancestry, the CBC's investigation found evidence, including a birth certificate, showing that she had been born to a Massachusetts family and was of European descent.
Sainte-Marie had visited the Canadian Museum for Human Rights over the years and performed at its 2014 opening celebration. The "Rights Today" exhibit showcased how Sainte-Maire had used her music to advocate for change.
