After leaving Merge for the even greener pastures of 4AD, Camera Obscura have let us in on the details of their forthcoming new full-length. Apparently, the Scottish twee-poppers have settled on the title My Maudlin Career for their fourth album proper, which will be out April 21 in North America courtesy of their new home.
According to head Camera Obscura lass Tracyanne Campbell, fans should brace themselves for a bit of a change-up this time out, explaining that there's perhaps more doomy gloom on this record than the band's earlier ones. "Some people who have heard it say it's intense and quite dark. I suppose it is, in a way," Campbell says in the press release. "We were even more open and brave when making it than we were with the last record. I've never been so brutal when its come to writing lyrics. I wouldn't even call them lyrics. Just documentation of what was going on with me for a while. I truly believe it's the best we've done so far."
On production duties, Swede Jari Haapalainen (Peter Bjorn and John, the Concretes) lent his skilled producer's hand to My Maudlin Career, much like he did on Camera Obscura's last effort, 2006's Let's Get Out of This Country. And to give a taste of what Herr Haapalainen and the band have come up with, Camera Obscura are dropping the album's first official single, "French Navy," on April 13, as well offering a free download of the record's title track over on the band's website right now.
Camera Obscura have only a few live dates announced so far but with any luck, more should come shortly. Here are those tour stops, as well as the album's tracklist:
