This summer, Scottish indie pop outfit Camera Obscura took a break as keyboardist Carey Lander underwent treatment for a rare form of bone cancer. Now, tragically, she has passed away. She was born in 1982, making her either 32 or 33.
Camera Obscura announced the sad news with a post on Facebook:
It is with the greatest sadness, that we must share the news that Carey passed away peacefully this morning after her illness with cancer. We have lost our friend and band mate, and our deepest sympathy goes out to her partner Kenny, and to all her family and friends.
She was touched by the way you all got behind her campaign for Sarcoma UK and you can still donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/Carey-Lander
We shall be continuing to help promote the campaign on her behalf.
She was left in no doubt how much you all loved and appreciated her, and we'd like to thank you all for the support and kind words you have been sending to us and her. The band, our music, and all of you who have enjoyed it over the years, meant so much to her.
Thank you all, Tracyanne, Gavin, Kenny and Lee x
Lander was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her leg back in 2011. In a statement back in August, she acknowledged, "It's probably too late to help me," but called for others to donate to help find a cure so that others might be saved.
Lander played in Camera Obscura for more than a decade. She appeared on 2003's Underachievers Please Try Harder and had been in the group ever since, most recently playing on 2013's Desire Lines.
