Cannon Bros.

Firecracker/Cloudglow

I was beginning to think that nobody was making music like this anymore. The honest to goodness indie-rock that harkens back to the days when every record label was heading out to Eastern Canada to sign any band that showed even the slightest potential and every city could be the next Seattle. But Winnipeg guitar and drums duo Cannon Bros. are making that kind of music and the world is a better place as a result.Their first full-length, Firecracker/Cloudglow, is a very satisfying collection of songs that still has a ragged-around-the-edges appeal, despite the pair having been under the tutorage of veteran Greg MacPherson. There's both the urgency of a young band and a maturity in the lyrics and tunes that makes for a heady mix, especially on the songs where drummer Alannah Walker takes the vocal lead although guitarist Cole Woods is no slouch as singing either.
It all brings to mind a laundry list of other bands such like Sarge, The Breeders, Jale and Pavement as they jangle and rock their way through a dozen songs without really putting a foot wrong. An incredibly impressive debut and one of the best Canadian albums of 2011.
