Canyon

Empty Rooms

BY Stuart GreenPublished Dec 1, 2002

Should Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd's MIA former leader, re-emerge and give indie rock a shot, chances are it would sound a little like Canyon's sophomore disc, Empty Rooms. With instrumentation that includes organ, electric piano, lap-steel guitar and harmonica, the disc's ten tracks immediately recall days of psychedelic prog-rock past with contemporary twangy tinges of alt-country and slo-core thrown into the mix. From album opener "Sleepwalker” through to the epic "Mansion on the Mountain” and "Head Above,” which typifies what Canyon is all about, this swirling, spacy, ethereal trip is one that Barrett would surely be happy to take.
