Casper Skulls' "Dying in Eight Verses" Reflects on Generational Cycles of Rock

Exclaim! Staff Picks

Casper Skulls have released a few songs from their upcoming album Kit-Cat, and I'm enjoying how completely out of step they sound with modern music trends, instead drawing on '80s/'90s college radio (Sonic Youth, Superchunk) and back-to-basics CBC Radio 3 rock (Rah Rah, Nap Eyes).

New single "Dying in Eight Verses" offers as many lyrics as the title promises, with a touching reflection on generational cycles. But even more than the lyrical content, the part that stands out is the steadily chugging groove, breezy guitar riff, and the matrimonial harmonies of Melanie St. Pierre-Bednis and Neil Bednis.

Kit-Cat is out April 11 through Next Door Records.
