Cloudface

Cloudface, aka Vancouver's David Reynolds, has developed a strong reputation back home for his engaging sets, and was the perfect choice to open Nocturne 4 at this year's MUTEK. Visuals of gently undulating wireframe waves were consistent on the screen behind him, as he put his array of pedals and various hardware to work. Incorporating dub, techno, house, UK bass vibes and touches of juke, it's fairly impossible to pin down what Cloudface is, but the various influences tie together in a way that makes perfect sense. The restrained use of acid squelches grew as visual representations of radio-waves pulsed on the screen. A few tracks in, the set became more banging and moody, gradually morphing into dreamy, West Coast psychedelia. It was a great, acid-laden set that almost ran in a reverse trajectory, ending in a very mellow final track.
