When it comes to churning out good musicians, sleepy Victoria, BC, tends to punch above its weight. After years as a staple of the city's bluegrass and folk scene, Cluny Macpherson's first EP seems to have been a long time coming.
Produced by Adrian Dolan, the recording showcases plenty of local talent, including a great guitar solo by Mick Baker on "Johnson St. Ramble." "Forgive You Blues" stands out with an unexpectedly rich arrangement, featuring the kind of string section folk albums made great use of in decades past, while "Cold North Wind" has the makings of a Canadian folk classic and features great three-party harmony on the chorus.
There's a sense of honesty about Macpherson's songwriting and delivery that really hits home, and these well worn-in songs are hopefully a taste of more to come.
