In the face of pop queen idolatry’s deflation (as in Britney Spears or Lindsey Lohan), it’s the perfect time for Colette’s pop electronica to fill the shoes of yesterday’s pop star news. Imagine pop radio with chunky electronic beats and integrity and you’ve about got Push. Colette did vocals and production on this album, which is gracefully simple, with deep bass and funky rhythms. Her lyrics sing about stuff like relationships gone wrong, relationships going right and calling people out on stuff. Colette started the SuperJane DJ troupe with fellow Chicagoans Dayhota, Lady D and Heather. Together, the group are demonstrating that female DJs don’t have to be a novelty. Push is a cross between house and pop, and it carries some cool social messages, as well as solid beats better heard in the company of other tracks than as an album.
