The saxophone went through an explosion in popularity in 2011, and now two of the instrument's most renowned players have teamed up for a collaborative album. Canada's Colin Stetson and Sweden's Mats Gustafsson have joined forces for Stones, due out January 8 on Rune Grammofon.
The four tracks that make up this collection were recorded live at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in 2011, where Stetson and Gustafsson met for the first time. The performance consists of bass and baritone sax, and a press release promises "long throaty drones" and "flutter-tonguing interplay."
The song titles were inspired by Swedish poet Gunnar Ekelöf. "It was completely magic," Gustafsson remembered of the show in a statement. "All was there, the communication, the interaction, the music, the mystery."
