Conor Oberst Announces 'Upside Down Mountain' Solo Album

While Conor Oberst is best known for his work as Bright Eyes, he has diversified his resume in recent years by releasing music with his supergroup Monsters of Folk, leading his Mystic Valley Band and reuniting with his post-hardcore outfit Desaparecidos. Now, the songwriter has announced a new solo album. Upside Down Mountain will be out on May 20 through Nonesuch.

While details about the album beyond the title and release date are still scarce, it will be preceded by a limited-edition 7-inch for Record Store Day (April 19). This single will feature the album cut "Hundreds of Ways," plus a B-side outtake called "Fast Friends."

Below, listen to the acoustic ditty "Hundreds of Ways." It's a lush and poppy acoustic song featuring horn flourishes, pedal steel twang and lots of pretty backing vocal harmonies.

Previous reports indicated that the country-leaning album was recorded in Nashville with producer Jonathan Wilson (Dawes, Father John Misty). Swedish folk sisters First Aid Kit appear on much of the album.

Oberst will be touring the U.S. this spring, but he currently doesn't have any Canadian shows. See the schedule here.

This is Obert's first proper solo effort since 2008's self-titled album. He then released Outer South as Conor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band in 2009.
