Drew Barrymore is back, but not exactly better. Her eponymous talk show has returned — for real this time — following the deal struck between the WGA and AMPTP last week that brought the Hollywood writers strike to a close.
Of course, in what must be a bid to get back on Exclaim!'s good side, Barrymore sat down for a heart-to-heart with Canadian country icon Shania Twain in her first episode back.
Albeit a few co-head writers short of her pre-strike staff, Barrymore's earnest, relatable approach to interviewing still shines through in her questions for the Timmins, ON-born superstar.
As the pair discussed their shared experience of essentially being groomed into their stardom as children, Twain pondered on her subjection to performing in nightclubs as a child.
"I had this passion for music and I thought, 'Well, I guess if you have a passion for music then this is the way you do it,'" she revealed. "I think certain personalities are not as capable of coping with it. I feel lucky that I was so resilient, but I paid a price for it, you know."
She also talked about the time she spent away from music after Lyme disease inflicted nerve damage on her vocal cords.
"I didn't know that I was ever going to get my voice back," she said. "It was a real liberation. I think that allowed me to appreciate the songwriting more than ever. I didn't have to be the singer anymore. I didn't have to be in the spotlight anymore."
Luckily for her fans, Twain returned after a 15-year hiatus in 2017 with Now and has since ushered in the Twainaissance with Queen of Me, which she's currently touring behind.
