Convicted Pedophile Gary Glitter Will Earn Big Royalties from Todd Phillips's 'Joker'

His song "Rock and Roll Part 2" plays for two minutes at a pivotal scene in the film

Despite no shortage of controversy, Todd Phillips's Joker was laughing all the way to the bank when it broke box-office records to make $234 million USD in its opening weekend. Unfortunately, however, some of that money is going to a convicted pedophile.

Disgraced rock star Gary Glitter was found guilty of sex crimes involving underage girls in 2015. He was subsequently handed a 16-year prison sentence. The musician born Paul Gadd was previously jailed in 1999 after admitting to possession of images of child abuse.

Gary Glitter is also the artist behind "Rock and Roll Part 2," an instrumental glam rock tune that was previously a well-known hockey anthem before it was shelved due to Glitter's bad reputation.

That song plays for approximately two minutes in Joker as Joaquin Phoenix's titular character dances down a long flight of stairs.

According to CNBC, Glitter will receive a lump sum for usage of the song in the movie. He'll also likely be in line to receive further royalties depending on ticket sales, film sales and sale of the film's soundtrack.

Warner Bros. has not yet commented on the use of the song in the film. Read Exclaim!'s review of Joker.
