San Francisco, CA band the Corner Laughers are very much the American equivalent of the Boy Least Likely To. They both make cute indie-pop songs and don't care what anyone thinks ― why else would they write a song called "I'd Rather Count Cormorants With You"? The bag of tricks they use on their third album isn't particularly large or packed with a number of neat ideas. Instead, they have a relatively straightforward plan of attack: breezy vocals from lead Laugher Karla Kane (with the occasional contribution from the males in the band) and jolly pop tunes that gallop along at a decent pace. And that's about it, but it works for them and Poppy Seeds is a very likeable record, just like its predecessor. However, anyone who heard its predecessor will lament that it isn't much of a step forward, although it didn't need to be. As long as there's a place in the world for carefree indie-pop then there will be a place for the Corner Laughers.
