After packaging his '80s efforts Nommos and Visiting together for 2014's Anthology of Interplanetary Folk Music Vol. 1., Craig Leon has now revealed a newly recorded second instalment in the series, making for his first album of new material in nearly four decades.
The American composer will deliver Anthology of Interplanetary Folk Music Vol. 2: The Canon through RVNG Intl. on May 10. Drawing from the cosmic concepts of his two aforementioned albums, The Canon in turn "expands upon the conceptual cycle based on the alien and mathematical relationships that backbone the creation of art, architecture, science, and music."
A press release notes that The Canon's concept continues to draw from the creation story of Mali's Dogon people, in which they said that Earth was visited in ancient times by the Nommos alien race. The Canon is said to "[trace] the path of ancient wisdom imparted by the Dogon's alien visitors, passed down as a book dubbed The Canon, as it spread from Mali into Egypt and across the water to Greece."
The album finds Leon collaborating once more with Cassell Webb, nearly four decades removed from their work on Nommos and Visiting. The pair composed, performed and produced all of the music of The Canon, with Cassell also handling vocal duties.
The Canon's "Standing Crosswise in the Square" can be heard in the player below, accompanied by some Milton Melvin Croissant III-helmed visuals.
