Charnel Passages

Death metal is the music of, well, death. The thing is, it often fails to capture the terrifying nature of being killed, sounding like the action itself but failing perhaps to truly capture the true dread of impending demise.

Cruciamentum's Charnel Passages includes all the requisite death metal components — blast beats, gruff growls, crunch tremolo riffing and more — without it ever feeling like they're going through a checklist. Their lifetime of love for and study of the form means they are influenced by the formative works — not Death and Possessed (though those influences are likely buried deeply within), but the unholy "I" duo of when death metal took a decidedly darker direction: Incantation and Immolation. Sure, there are touches of doom a la Autopsy, the barbed hooks of Bolt Thrower, the frenetic solos of Morbid Angel and other such flourishes, but the roots were planted in Golgotha.

Adding to the soundtrack of slaughter is the inclusion of horror film score-esque organs and choirs, which often accompany the sparser sections and heighten the anxious anticipation of the guillotine's drop. Cruciamentum's blade is razor-sharp.
