Crystal Castles Unveil '(III),' Share New Single

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Sep 26, 2012

We've known for a while now that Toronto's Crystal Castles were set to drop their anticipated third full-length LP this fall, and the group have now confirmed that is indeed the case. The album has been given the to-the-point title (III), and it will hit Canadian stores November 6 via Last Gang.

While vocalist Alice Glass previously revealed that lyrically, the album deals with "feeling... oppressed," a statement from the group's Ethan Kath, who produced the album in full, suggests that the group liberated themselves musically by rethinking their sonic approach.

"We wanted the new album to sound like a completely different and new experience," he said, noting that much of the synthesizers that featured on I and II were scrubbed, and how he applied a "strictly no computers" rule to the recording sessions. "We'd limit ourselves to one take on each song because we believe the first take is the rawest expression of an idea."

The album was mostly recorded in Warsaw and Poland. While the tracklisting has yet to be revealed, it will include previously teased track "Plague."

Back to the lyrics, Glass explained that some personal traumas influenced her words on the song cycle.

"A lot of bad things have happened to people close to me since II and it's profoundly influenced my writing as I've realized there will never be justice for them," she said. "I didn't think I could lose faith in humanity any more than I already had, but after witnessing some things, it feels like the world is a dystopia where victims don't get justice and corruption prevails."

Up above, you can see the record's cover. The press release explains, "The artwork for the forthcoming album is an award-winning photograph taken by Samuel Aranda and features Fatima al-Qaws cradling her son Zayed who is suffering from the effects of tear gas after participating in a street demonstration in Sanaa, Yemen."
