Cansei de Sur Sexy

Published Jul 1, 2006

Although CSS will no doubt be highly marketed as Sub Pop’s first Latin American band, Cansei de Sur Sexy is a sexy slap-in-the-face to anyone with pre-conceived notions of what is happening anywhere south of the Rio Grande today. From the Sao Paulo underground, CSS are five amazingly-dressed, shy-on-the-outside artsy girls (the kind that always make the "Do’s” in Vice) and one lucky male drummer. Cansei de Sur Sexy (translation: "Tired of Being Sexy”) is highly charged, sexual music in the vein of Le Tigre, but way more fun and without the political stance. The lyrics are a simple, call and response style that you know weren’t learnt in ESL class and would make Peaches blush. The first four songs alone are an indie rocker’s wet dream. The beat-driven, cheerleading sing-along on opener "CSS Suxxx” (which might fool you into thinking CSS are the new Go! Team), the pulsating aggressive synths of "Alala” and the faux-disco and possible nod or diss to DFA79 on "Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death From Above” will guarantee this album a spot at all of the cool parties in the coming months. These Ironically enough, it is the same poseurs and model waifs that the band bring to light on "Art Bitch” and "Meeting Paris Hilton” that will likely be spilling their drinks on you while trying to get down.
