The old adage of "less is more" has definitely worked wonders for NYC duo Cults. Though the group haven't shrouded themselves in mystery the same way the Freemasons have, the information floating around about the band is pretty scant. There's no MySpace page, no Facebook, no Twitter. what the outfit do have, however, is a BandCamp site with three free downloads of cutesy psychedelic sock-hop-pop, which were pressed onto a limited seven-inch on Forest Family Records.
The xylophone-laden "Go Outside" single got some hype earlier this year and the band ended up touring with other up-and-comers like Twin Sister and the Morning Benders. It turns out that their secrecy, or perhaps modesty, over their project has paid off handsomely: Cults have reportedly signed to major label Columbia Records.
Pitchfork reports that the duo of Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion have signed on with the label and are currently working on their debut full-length with producer Shane Stoneback (Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells, Fucked Up) at the helm.
While the act were touring with a full backing band, it's unknown whether or not the extra help have become full-fledged Cults members.
