Although Record Store Day (April 20) is often associated with short-run releases and collectors editions, Canuck rock duo Cursed Arrows will buck the trend by dropping their latest full-length, Sonic Union, on that celebratory day.
The band, which features the married duo of Ryan Stanley (guitar, vocals) and Jack E Stanley (drums, vocals), self-recorded and self-produced the 10-song album in 2012. It includes a Captain Beefheart cover as a bonus 11th track.
The pair trade off lead vocals on minimal songs that range from ragged blues stomps ("Little Girl Blue," "Unfortunate Few") to more garage rock-leaning material ("The Destructor"). There are also forays into frantic art rock ("Thought I Was a Nice Guy [But I'm an Asshole"]) and metal-tinged riffing ("Hexhausted").
