Cut Copy

"So Haunted"

Melbourne, OZ’s Cut Copy have set a March 2008 release for In Ghost Colours, their follow-up to the brilliant-but-sadly-overlooked debut Bright Like Neon Love. To promote their upcoming Australian tour, the trio have given another sneak peek at their sophomore effort with what they’re hailing as the second single. Produced by the DFA’s Tim Goldsworthy, "So Haunted” shows immediate modifications to the 4/4 obsessed synth pop that made their debut so precious. Considering the retro-electro house push of previous single "Hearts On Fire,” this successor feels like the pod people have come and done the switcheroo with our heroes. The droning guitars disorientate in a Loveless manner, while the verse shifts into high gear for the chorus much like the abrupt transition in Split Enz’s "I Got You.” And then two-thirds of the way it hits you: the beats take a beeline for the dance floor and the synths get glittery and rise up in the mix to get us back on Cut Copy’s beaten path for some elated club-friendly closure. Turns out they haven’t abandoned us, and it appears Cut Copy will dazzle us once again, and hopefully, in turn, bring us an early spring so we can go out dancin’.
