We've been patient while we wait for Cut Copy to complete the follow-up to their 2008 dance pop masterpiece, In Ghost Colours. Earlier this year, the group revealed that they were hard at work on the follow-up, promising an early 2011 release. Well, the Aussies are men of their words, as the album now has a February 8 release date.
According to Spin, the record is called Zonoscope and features a NYC cityscape drenched by a waterfall on the cover. The image was created by Tsunehisa Kimura, who also made the cover for Midnight Oil's Red Sails in the Sunset.
Speaking with the magazine, band member Tim Hoey said the artwork represents the album's sound well. "We certainly are using all sorts of electronic instruments, more synthesizers, computers, all of that, but contrasted with more organic sounds, more organic percussion," he said. "Since [frontman] Dan [Whitford] came across the image a few months ago, he's stuck with it, and thought that it summed up what we wanted to get across."
The album was recorded in an industrial complex in Melbourne, Australia. "There was no Internet in there, barely any heat, nothing, just fucking industrial Melbourne," Hoey explained. "We just knew we could kind of go in there and not feel pressured. We were just kind of locked in there by ourselves, and we couldn't have had it sounding how it sounds without us going in there."
