Australian dance pop crew Cut Copy stole our hearts with 2008's excellent In Ghost Colours, clinching the spot as Exclaim!'s favourite electronic album of the year. Since then, the trio have remained relatively quiet as they work on a follow-up without repeating themselves. According to a recent interview, a new direction has been discovered and recorded, with plans for a new album in 2011.
Speaking with Pitchfork, Cut Copy's Dan Whitford said the band have been loosening their sound. "It was a much more open-ended process where we just sort of went off on these more jam-y tangents where we'd just sit there and play stuff for ten minutes and see what happened," he said of the new recordings, adding, "I was obsessed with Fleetwood Mac's Tusk while working on this record.... Also, Talking Heads, Slave to the Rhythm by Grace Jones and Malcolm McLaren's Duck Rock album. And a lot of acid house era, post-rave indie music like Happy Mondays and Primal Scream."
The new album was recorded in a warehouse in an industrial area of Melbourne, Australia and does not yet have a title. Pitchfork did add that the album will likely be out in January 2011, with a single dropping this fall. Some in-studio footage of the band can be viewed here.
While they were working on the new disc, Whitford also revealed that Cut Copy had been invited to open for Lady Gaga on tour. "It was one of those weird moments where you're not sure whether to burn the letter or frame it and put it on your wall," he recalls. "We were simultaneously repulsed, but also tantalized by the idea of touring with her for a whole year."
