D-Sisive will not rest. After last year's Polaris Music Prize-nominated Let The Children Die and his second full length of 2009, Jonestown, the Toronto hip-hop workaholic is back at it again and taking things to the next level with his new album Vaudeville.
The album was produced with Andrew 'Fresh Kils' Kilgour and features an out-of-the-blue guest spot from Canadian songsmith Ron Sexsmith. According to the press release, the album boasts a variety of influences and themes that only someone like D-Sisive could get away with, plus "smoke and mirror gags mixed with punch lines, and intense stories."
And with song titles such as "The Riot Song," "Percocet" and "The Night My Baby Died," it's easy to see that D-Sisive has looked outside of traditional hip-hop in order to find the inspiration he needed. Seriously, who ever thought that Sexsmith would appear in a hip-hop album?
"Working with Ron Sexsmith was incredible," says D-Sisive in the release. "Very surreal. I've been harassing him for years to get on a song with me. Thank god restraining orders expire."
To cut and paste a little more of D-Sisive left-field remarks about the album: "It's no secret that my work is fueled by beef. With the media. With gang members. With other artists. It's part of my daily routine, and always pops up when least expected. Like the time Tom Cochrane pulled a pistol on me backstage at Roy Thomson Hall. He asked me, 'You ever talk with a gun in your mouth?' Happens all of the time. Alan Frew (Glass Tiger) holding a butterfly knife to my throat in Union Station, while asking me 'You ever talk with a gun in your mouth?' And the time I emailed Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo) to be on Vaudeville. His reply, 'Sure. Oh, wait! You're not Sean Desman! Fuck you. JC. - PS You ever talk with a gun in your mouth?' Why do people keep asking me that?"
Vaudeville is out on URBNET Records in Canada on June 15 and in the U.S. on July 27.
