Daft Punk Unboxing Commercial Ripped Off for PlayStation 4 Ad

Daft Punk's promotional campaign in advance of this year's Random Access Memories was nothing short of masterful, so it makes sense that advertisers would be eager to steal some of the band's hype-building tricks. Sure enough, the new commercial for the PlayStation 4 is a shameless rip-off of the unboxing ad for Random Access Memories.

The two commercials look almost identical. In both ads, the products are unveiled by gloved hands in a spaceship-like room filled with machines and flashing lights. The futuristic tone and cinematography are extremely similar as well between the two clips, while the settings are almost identical.

This isn't copyright infringement, since Random Access Memories was released by Columbia Records, which is owned by Sony, the manufactures of PlayStation. So really, this is an instance of a corporation recycling its own commercials for different products.

PlayStation 4 launches on November 15. Hopefully Sony's gaming department is going into the project with more original ideas than its marketing wing appears to be.
