Dan Mangan and his recently rechristened backup band Blacksmith have teased their as-yet-untitled fourth full-length, as well as soundtrack work for Simon Pegg's Hector and the Search for Happiness, by releasing a 7-inch single featuring "Vessel."
The song and B-side "Wants" just went up for sale via Arts & Crafts, appearing as a 7-inch slab of wax limited to 500 copies on "opaque white" vinyl and as a digital download. You can check out Dan Mangan + Blacksmith's "Vessel" — flooded with Mangan's rich vocals, wildly spindling licks from guitarist Gord Grdina, feathery flute work, drunken brass, and a few chopped-up samples— down below.
The record is available to order here. It's out now digitally, with the 7-inch set to arrive October 14.
While Mangan had previously revealed that he had composed a series of instrumental tracks for Pegg's Hector and the Search for Happiness, "Vessel" will also appear in the film, with the press release calling the song "an integral component to the soundtrack." The world premiere is this Sunday (September 7) at the Toronto International Film Festival, while the flick receives a wider release September 19. There's no firm word yet when the soundtrack, which also features the scoring talents of Jesse Zubot (Tanya Tagaq, Stars, Hawksley Workman), will see release.
As for Dan Mangan + Blacksmith's upcoming album, which follows 2011's Oh Fortune, it's expected to be issued by Arts & Crafts later this fall. While details have yet to arrive beyond the unleashing of "Vessel," Mangan had previously told Exclaim! that the new tunes have a "Radiohead-y Peter Gabriel vibe" steering away from his earlier folky days.
"There's not much about what I'm doing that's cute anymore," he had said at the time. "I'm kind of over cute. There was a time that I was really into cute, and I did cute pretty well. That's not really who I am now."
In addition to a pair of upcoming Canadian concerts, Mangan and Blacksmith have added a round of U.S. tour dates with Bear's Den and a show in Toronto next February with labelmate/Canadian indie icon Hayden. You'll find all of the info down below.
