Danko Jones

Below The Belt

BY Keith CarmanPublished May 11, 2010

Is it really any surprise that Danko Jones would issue an album dubbed Below The Belt? After all, that is where the primal riff rockers garner most of their inspiration. And what's wrong with that? Absolutely nothing, as this fifth full-length, inspired by a wealth of testosterone even they seem stunned by, demands. Kicking off with the gritty, yet catchy, "I Think Bad Thoughts" and its sentiments about fornication in fancy cars, meandering through "Magic Snake" (a connotation Gene Simmons would be proud of) and wrapping up with frustrated rant "I Wanna Break Up With You," the album's 11 tracks admirably maintain the rudimentary drive and churning prowess/confidence Jones are revered for. Still, Below The Belt isn't without surprises, namely the engaging and advanced attack of "Had Enough," a modestly exploratory, metallically tinged track that reveals Jones's understated abilities. Naturally, lest we forget their penchant for wit, "(I Can't Handle) Moderation" gives us a brain full, ensuring that Below The Belt is the trio's most comfortable, dynamic and interesting album to date.
