Since Phoebe Bridgers' appearance on SNL over the weekend, her onstage antics have been the subject of plenty of debates. Specifically, a number of fans and fellow musicians are arguing whether or not she should have smashed her guitar over a monitor — and plenty of voices have come out to criticize her in recent days. Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl has now entered the conversation, endorsing Bridgers' theatrics and her performance.
Speaking with the Howard Stern Show this morning [via CoS], Grohl commended Bridgers for her "beautiful voice," adding that "she can really sing." He also compared her band's performance to his early days with Nirvana: "When you watch us jam and freak out and do our thing… I think that's what they did."
He added: "It was every fucking night. My drums had holes in them from Kurt [Cobain] fucking chopping my drums. I've seen enough smashed guitars. It feels fucking good to do it."
Grohl's comments come following some ruthless critique by David Crosby, who called Bridgers' antics "pathetic" and "wrong," and even took the time to bash her outfit. Crosby has since been accused of misogyny and being a figurehead of the old guard who are needlessly gatekeeping rock music.
Grohl's attitude was a little more inclusive:
First of all — you have to understand that for the last 10 years, every interview I do I'm asked, "Is rock'n'roll dead? There's no guitars anymore!" So in the last year, there's been this return to guitar rock music in popular music — like, Miley Cyrus is becoming Joan Jett…. You're starting to see, people are realizing rock'n'roll is cool.
