The Dead Weather

"Hang You From The Heavens"/"Are Friends Electric?" (Gary Numan cover)

Recently making the unannounced debut at the grand reopening of Jack White's Third Man Records is the White Stripes leader's new band, the Dead Weather. No stranger to forming bands on a whim (ahem, the Raconteurs), White's new one has quite the pedigree, boasting the likes of Alison Mosshart (the Kills), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) and Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs/Greenhornes). Not bad, not bad at all. And to back up the instant hype, the supergroup have already dropped a couple of tracks you can pick up over at iTunes.

A-side "Hang You From The Heavens" is an original that recalls the slinky garage Mosshart struts to in the Kills, as she uses her sexy pipes even more effectively, while White's fuzz-drenched guitar screech burns holes through the amp. It's such a rush that it almost makes me forget about that last limp Raconteurs record he and Lawrence dropped out of nowhere.

The B-side is a cover of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?" Coming off more as a throwaway, the foursome tweak a synth to match Numan's,while White manipulates his instrument to match. It's a bit pastiche but "Hang You From The Heavens" more than makes up for it.

According to reports, you can expect their full-length debut some time in June.
