Dear Mr. Fantasy: A Celebration for Jim Capaldi

BY Eric ThomPublished Feb 21, 2008

When you think of Traffic, you may not think Jim Capaldi first but perhaps you should. The singer, songwriter, drummer and co-founder of the groundbreaking band that had two or more lives was more renowned for his wild man antics than for his prolific and unshakeable contribution to British music. And, for the sake of this warm and oft-emotional all-star tribute, he was also the spiritual heart and soul of Traffic. If you can judge a loss by who shows up at your tribute, this one’s to die for: Paul Weller, Joe Walsh, Jon Lord, Simon Kirke, Gary Moore, Yosuf Islam (Cat Stevens), Bill Wyman and Steve Winwood join together for less of a Traffic flashback than the true career celebration this much-loved man deserved. Heartfelt and tear inducing, this 140-minute show features a well-rehearsed all-star band and many highlights with Pete Townshend, Walsh and Winwood shining brightest of all. With the proceeds benefiting Aninha Capaldi’s charity for needy orphans, this delivers good feelings all around.
