Press materials have indicated that Canuck folkies the Deep Dark Woods went in a psychedelic direction when recording their latest album, Jubilee, and now we can hear this in action. Ahead of the disc's October 1 release through Six Shooter Records, the whole thing is available to stream on Exclaim.ca.
The 13-track collection was helmed by psych-folk producer Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty), with sessions taking place in a cabin near Bragg Creek, AB. The record was largely recorded live off the floor.
Jubilee kicks off with "Miles and Miles," as swaths of fuzz drift through a think blanket of reverb while accompanied by falsetto coos. The band venture into more roots-y sounds on "18th of December" and the harmony-filled "Gonna Have a Jubilee," while "East St. Louis" and "It's Been a Long Time" are steeped in nocturnal atmosphere.
